Unvarnished Reputation Website
Unvarnished Reputation Website – I just heard about Unvarnished the other day from a friend in the Tech Industry. It’s a new website that will give people access to write about anyone whatever they want anonymously. Everyone is automatically enrolled into it. The whole internet is at a writer’s disposable. The creators want to keep it as open as possible and not track users.
Techcrunch did an amazing job outlining the service in an article titled, “Reputation Is Dead: It’s Time To Overlook Our Indiscretions by Michael Arrington “ In this article he outlines why we really should no longer care about what we have done online. That enough people have enough indiscretions that it shouldn’t affect our professional lives. That we should just get over it.
I think there is a valid point in this but at the same time I find it unsettling. The one silver lining that I found in it is that you as an individual have access to write positively about yourself. You can’t remove bad reviews but you can encourage your “Fans” to write positively about you.
Honestly, what random employer is going to take an anonymous quote on the internet seriously anyway? You wouldn’t use anonymous information as a source for your research, right? That’s not best practices. It seems unlikely that someone’s professional life is going to rest on the reputation of an internet troll.
Should we indulge these sorts of entertainments? Privacy is a big issue on the internet. Google got itself into a lot of hot water over Google Buzz. In fact you should go to your Gmail account and check your Buzz setting. Google is running a campaign to fix its error and is making sure that people know they can opt out of Buzz. What right does a website have to publish information about ourselves without us opting into the service?
