Open Question: Can teachers see a student’s Facebook profile? Read for info.?

Published on January 8, 2010 by Technology Slice

My friend recently posted a comment on Facebook (and by comment, I means she commented of somebody’s status) about a teacher (nothing serious) and the next day the teacher told her to ‘watch what she wrote on facebook’ about her (in an angry way).
The profile settings were completely private. Only friends allowed to see the profile.
However, some people had the theory that because she was in the school network, the school was able to see the profile. Others say somebody simply told the teacher.
Another teacher told us once that the school has the ability to phone Facebook and ask to view student’s profile. But she was not, and had not previously done anything wrong or said anything offensive before, so why was there such a cause for concern to spy? It wasn’t even a post, it was a comment.
The last thing is, the teacher has three sons at the same school who my friend was friends with on Facebook. HOWEVER, the teacher specifically said that she did not find out through her sons.
Can anybody explain how this happened? I feel the comment was not serious enough for somebody to tell her about it. Please help, we are seriously concerned the school is spying on people, a la 1984.
