Open Question: Condenser Mic vs Dynamic Mic? If Condenser Mic… USB Condenser Mic vs Preamp+Condenser Mic?

Published on January 8, 2010 by Technology Slice

Here is my situation:
I’ve been an active youtuber for over a year now. I predominately record covers of songs and also create video tutorials on the guitar for viewers. I also enjoy writing songs and putting them on their as well. I am not looking for anything studio quality but I’d like something that can do the following:
1) Remove all of the static, white noise when I’m trying to record.
2) Not overload too easily and distort the sound quality
3) Easily hook up to a PC to record into Audacity (essentially here my PC needs to recognize it)

As I said before, I don’t need the highest quality mic out there but I’d like something that captures the clean, crisp sounds of a steel stringed acoustic guitar and is also able to pic up my voice easily as well. Finally, I’m looking to be within the $100 dollar range.

Now for my question:
I know there are two mics and I’ve done research on both kinds. From what I could tell (and I know its all up to preference but…) it seems that Dynamic mics are better for vocals and Condenser mics are better for Acoustic Guitars. I’d like to only buy 1 mic so which is more versatile?

Finally, if the Condenser mic is the best option, then is it smarter to purchase a USB Condenser Mic (Thus eliminating the need for a preamp) or going all out and buying a mic and pre-amp? Keep in mind I wanna stay around $100 dollars so is it better to get the USB Mic worth $100 or have to split that $100 dollars between a Mic and Pre-amp?

Sorry for the exceptionally long “question” but everybody else that asked in 1 sentence just had people ask for more information so I figured I’d be thorough!

P.S. If you wanna see the kind of quality my videos currently are being recorded in, see my page for reference. http://www.youtube.com/user/SaveOurServer

I’d like to step it up from the quality shown in those videos…
