Open Question: Cloudy water after adding sand to new aquarium, how do I clear the water up?

Published on January 7, 2010 by Technology Slice

Okay so here is the deal. I bought a used 72 gallon bow front tank set up- sins the substrate. I bought 150 pounds of white play sand and rinsed it what I thought was very well. Obviously not well enough because the water is a murky-milk color. I stuck an old 30 gallon tank filter on the side over night hoping that would speed up the clearing but this morning the water looks more or less the same.

I KNOW you need to rinse the sand really well, I KNOW play sand isn’t the best substrate, I KNOW the risks associated with toxic air pockets. What I DON’T know is how to clear up the water once its already become cloudy. Removing the sand is not an option, the tank is far too large. Short of a massive, complete water change using my Python- I am lost for ideas,

I am NOT looking for a lecture.

I AM looking for constructive advice.

I wanted to start cycling my tank for water quality so that I could start stocking my tank. Obviously now that is going to take much longer than I expected. It is a gorgeous tank and it is a shame to see it sit here in its current condition. Please, I know others have been in my situation, I have seen lots of “ohh no’s you shouldn’t do that” on the internet but I have yet to see any “this is how you take care of the problem.”

Hopefully this post will help others in the future who experience the same issues.

Thank you!!
