Open Question: How long should I keep my new kitten isolated from my existing cat?

Published on January 9, 2010 by Technology Slice

I have a six year old spayed female cat I raised since she was a 4 week old kitten. She was always an only pet and an indoor cat, so she hasn’t come in contact with a lot of other animals. On top of that she is somewhat an anti-social cat, doesn’t really like to be pet or picked up, never comes to sit on your lap and usually stays away if our friends come over.
A week ago, my boyfriend and I, adopted a new kitten. We picked a male, neutered, very young kitten of 4 months old thinking that it would be easier for our cat to adopt to.
I read everything I could find on how to introduce cats. We keep him segregated and closed off in one of the rooms with food, litter box, etc. We play and give attention and love to both cats equally and swapped their toys and blankets. It’s been almost a week into the new kitten’s residency. Here is the situation: cats know of each others scents and existence. Kitten seems not to care at all about the “other” cat, he just wants to run around and play with humans. My female cat is completely freaked out. She is hiding under a Christmas tree, in the living room, most of the time, completely out of reach. If she comes out, she is usually always “hunched” and monitoring the door to the office where the kitten is which is across the hall from the living room. She has absolutely no desire to go sniff the door or anything like that. After the 4th day, we tried to “introduce” the kitten to her and put him in a box and brought to her remaining a “safe” distance. She kind of puffed out, just stood there for few seconds not knowing what to do and I took the kitten away. Today is the sixth day and she still under the tree not willing to socialize or go check out the kitten in his domain, so we bribed her from the tree with treats, gave her lots of attention and then i brought up the kitten into the hall where she could see him and she started growling like crazy and backing up to go under the tree again. I have no idea what to do. Should I still keep them separately and for how long? The kitten is starting to try to escape from the confines of the office and go exploring beyond the “office door.” What do I do??????
