Open Question: My rat is sneezing, what could it be?

Published on January 9, 2010 by Technology Slice

A month ago I adopted two adorable rats at 5 weeks old. They were both sneezing at the time which I attributed to stress and waited to see if they would stop. Now, a month later, one of them still has little bouts of sneezing and makes this odd little chirping noise when he eats. He is really active and alert, always excited to come out of his cage and play (the non-sneezing rat is actually very shy in comparison).

They are both a nice healthy weight, have been eating Mazuri lab blocks that I gradually introduced to them when I adopted them. I use Carefresh bedding that I switch out a little everyday for new bedding. Once a week I clean out the whole cage. They are in a nice big wire cage in a well ventilated room (but not in direct sunlight or near a draft). Also, there is no Porphyrin staining near the eyes or nose. The rat is not squinting, no labored breathing, or gasping, so I don’t believe it is Mycoplasma pulmonis.

At this point, I am really not sure what it is or if it is even harmful since I have had them for five weeks and he appears to be very healthy. Should I still take him to a vet for an assessment?
