Peter Garrett – THE Opposition has accused Peter Garrett and his environment department of a “cover-up” following revelations he was kept in the dark by his department over warnings the home insulation scheme should be delayed for three months because of extreme risks.
Mr Garrett yesterday admitted the report on the risks of a rushed rollout, completed in April, did not reach his desk until yesterday – when it was dragged from officials during a senate inquiry.
The “cover-up” accusation came as a Liberal senator warned dodgy insulation was a greater threat to families than terrorism and as the government faced censure by the Senate for the first time since taking office in 2007.
As the Prime Minister prepared to launch its counter-terrorism white paper today, the Coalition also accused the government of trying to divert attention from the insulation controversy.
“The greatest threat to the safety of many Australian families over the last 12 months has been the home insulation program and Peter Garrett’s mismanagement of it and tragically that’s an ongoing threat to safety,” Senator Simon Birmingham told 2UE.
