Nuclear Power Plants
President Obama has unveiled plans for new nuclear power plants in the U.S.
During an appearance a jobs training facility in Maryland, the President stressed the need for “homegrown energy” to reduce U.S. dependence on foreign oil.
Obama announced plans to make an eight-billion dollar loan guarantee to help build two new nuclear power reactors in Georgia.
They would be the first new nuclear power facilities to secure U.S. government approval in about 30 years.
The President said “safe, clean nuclear energy” must be an important part of America’s energy future.
President Obama said the projects will create thousands of new construction jobs.
Proponents cite nuclear power as a relatively clean source of energy that will help the U.S. reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Critics cite safety concerns and have long raised questions about how to safely dispose of radioactive waste.
