A 19-year-old student who was left with permanent facial scarring after a vicious nightclub glassing has described the attack as a ‘‘coward act’’.

Kent Thomas said he did not realise how serious his injuries were after he was struck in the face with a glass at South Melbourne’s Motel nightclub ‘‘until the blood started dripping out’’.

Police arrested a 16-year-old Bentleigh East boy at the club shortly after the attack, which occurred about 2am on Saturday. He was interviewed and later released pending further inquiries.

Police said they were investigating the presence of a 16-year-old in a licensed venue.

One of the club owners, who didn’t want to be identified, said the teenage boy used a fake or false ID to gain entry, but maintained the nightclub ‘‘has always had, and will also have the most stringent entry requirements’’.

‘‘But there will always be kids who want to push the boundaries,’’ she said.

She would not comment on whether the boy had been served alcohol.

Mr Thomas, from Mornington, was with friends on the nightclub’s upstairs dance floor when he was pushed by another male, police said.

He pushed back and was then struck in the face with a glass, which shattered on his forehead causing deep gashes.
