Millionaire Ate Rat Poison In Stunt

The 60-year-old man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, yesterday told his sentencing hearing he bought the poison in April while the jury was still in deliberations, after a relative of the victim told him, “pack your toothbrush, you’re going down”.

After the guilty verdict was delivered, he waited until the jury left the court before announcing he had swallowed the poison. He was rushed to hospital.

He denied the dramatic act was a stunt.

His lawyer Gabriel Wendler told the Sydney District Court his client had “fallen from a great height, he has been effectively destroyed”.

The man now faces a maximum sentence of 25 years jail.

In a victim’s impact statement read to the court by Crown Prosecutor, Kara Shead, the girl said she kept silent for five years, feeling guilty every day, and wrote letters to the man pleading with him to stop.
