Malcolm Turnbull Set To Quit Politics
Malcolm Turnbull Set To Quit Politics – Malcolm Turnbull has removed one of the biggest threats to Tony Abbott’s leadership of the Liberal Party, signalling he will not recontest his seat of Wentworth at the next federal election.
But as he went, he took a swipe at his successor’s decision to scrap support for an emissions trading scheme.
The former opposition leader and one-time merchant banker announced the news on his Twitter account this morning, and a short time later released a statement to the same effect.
‘‘I have today formally advised the leader of the opposition and the president of the Wentworth FEC (federal election commission) of the Liberal Party that I will not be contesting the seat of Wentworth at the federal election later this year,’’ he said in the statement.
He thanked his wife Lucy, his family and the people of Wentworth for their support over the last five and half years.
Last month Mr Turnbull was snubbed by Mr Abbott after the former leader expressed interest in returning to the front bench, though Mr Abbott at the time left open the prospect of him rejoining the ministry after the election.
