Indian Students in Australia

indian-students-violenceIndian students have been coming to Australia to study for a very long time now. They come here with almost nothing. They study hard and work hard to put themselves through school. They work night jobs at fast food restaurants and drive taxis. Many become very successful. What lures them here is the opportunities that are available they can’t get at home.

Recently there has been a big uproar in Melbourne over the recent bashings of Indians students. Indian students all over Melbourne think they are being targeted specifically by thugs. Is it racism? Maybe so. With news of the cronulla riots people around the globe already have a very dim view of racial tolerance in Australia. I think it is more their pacifist nature than anything. They present somewhat of an easy target. Let’s not forget thugs are generally also cowards. They prey on the weak. If there is a chance they will be hurt they will generally avoid getting into a fight in the first place. They also hang around in groups for the same reason.

In response to the bashings, over 1000 Indian students staged a protest in the CBD to voice their anger over recent hapennings. Many were arrested for breaching the peace while one was charged with riotous behaviour. They really aren’t getting their point across this way. They are angry about the recent violence directed at their specific group yet they also get violent. One police office was bitten on the hand while others were pushed around. The protesters were told nicely to move to another location and continue their protest but they declined.

I think they have now just made themselves a bigger target. Rioting is only going to bring more negative feelings towards them. They can’t be victims if they are acting violent themselves.
