Illegal Movie Downloads

illegal-movie-downloadPeople have been downloading movies illegally for a long time basically ripping off producers and actors a like. Someone obtains an illegal copy and uploads it to a site, where everyone else downloads it and watches it at home. This is illegal but there is nothing that can be done to stop it at the moment.

Lately the number of illegal movie downloads has risen in Australia. This is due in main, to the global financial crisis and people tightening their belts. Rather than going to the cinemas and paying $20 per person, they download the movies and watch them at home. Having a tight budget is not an excuse to be illegally downloading movies.

It may be all well and good thinking you can download movies for free illegally, but how long do people think it will last? One of two things can happen if the increase in movie piracy continues. Firstly, the movie studios may find a way to stop the distribution of illegal copies of movies forcing consumers to pay for them. The second is the movie and music industry shutting down completely. If they are no longer profitable and people keep stealing their movies and music they will either have to cut their losses or go bankrupt.

There is also a moral dilemma for those with a conscious. Many people think nothing of downloading illegal music. They wouldn’t dare steal anything from their local supermarket yet they have no problem stealing movies from the internet. Why do people not consider downloading a movie as stealing? It’s simple. Because it is not physical. It’s on the internet therefore is not real and can’t be regarded as stealing.

On the other hand there are plenty of people that do regard downloading movies as stealing but continue to do it because it’s free and convenient. They watch movies that are released at the cinemas in the comfort of their own home without having to wait for session times. It’s because of these people the problem will never go away.

The movie and music seem to think suing the pants of a few individuals will help solve their problem. It only makes things worse. Half the time they sue people that are old, or sick making the individual look like a victim. This incites anger towards them almost justifying, in their minds, more people downloading illegal copies.

In my opinion, the torrent sites need to be shut down for starters. They are able to operate, without impunity, clearly offering illegal downloads of movies.
