Governor Kenny Guinn Dies
Governor Kenny Guinn Dies – Nevada Gov. Jim Gibbons has ordered flags be flown at half-staff after his predecessor, former Gov. Kenny Guinn (gwin), died after a fall from his roof today. He was 73.
The two-term moderate Republican was on the roof of his Las Vegas home to make repairs. Authorities are investigating whether the death was from natural causes or an accident.
A Guinn family spokesman says the former governor’s wife has “lost her best friend.” Nevada Senate Minority Leader Bill Raggio called Guinn “one of the best governors we’ve every had.”
Guinn, a former Clark County school superintendent and millionaire bank chairman, was a Democrat-turned-moderate Republican who served two terms as governor during a prosperous era for the state, from 1998 to 2007.
During his tenure, he overhauled government agency operations, revamped budgeting and tax collections and sought to diversify Nevada’s casino-dependent economy.
