Fosamax And Femur Fractures Link
Fosamax And Femur Fractures Link – Fosamax, a bisphosphonate used as a bone strengthening drug prescribed for women suffering from osteoporosis, may lead some women to suffer femur fractures, according to the investigation by ABC News. Concerns about Fosamax have been raised in previous years, but producer Merck and FDA have yet to react.
Osteoporosis is a debilitating condition that reduces bone mineral density and makes one’s bones susceptible to disabling bone fractures. Fosamax increases bone mass to strengthen the bones and reduce the risk of fracture in those with osteoporosis.
Now, it is alleged that long-term use of Fosamax can actually lead to femur fractures. It is suspected that using Fosamax for more than five years could cause spontaneous fractures even as the result of low-energy activities that do not involve hard falls.
Merck has been investigating reports of femur fractures for years. The initial concerns about the safety of Fosamax have been raised as far back as 2008.
