Fiji Cyclone
Fiji Cyclone – In Fiji, the extent of damage from Cyclone Tomas is becoming clearer, nearly two weeks after the huge storm tore through the Pacific.
Disaster Management officials in Suva have revealed almost 800 homes or buildings have either been partly damaged or destroyed in the northern and eastern districts.
Operations officer Anthony Blake says the assessment of damage has been completed by teams on the ground.
He says all evacuation centres have now been closed.
Despite the arrival of relief supplies from Australia and New Zealand, the threat of disease remains a big worry because of damage to water and sanitation facilties.
Tim Sutton, UNICEF’s deputy representative in the Pacific, says everything’s been done to try to prevent further outbreaks of disease.
“The water and sanitation facilities and the services that were there have been very badly damaged,” he said.
“The health facilties are overwhelmed and we know that we have typhoid in the area, so conditions for a larger outbreak are in place. So we are in a place against time to make sure that people can access clean water and have safe hygiene to prevent the spread of a very nasty disease.”
