Drugs in Australia
More often than not you hear the older generation of Australians complaining about the new generation. A couple of generations ago they would complain the young don’t cut their hair or dress sharp enough. Now the complaints have turned into they binge drink too much and take too many drugs. Young Australians have a scary culture of binge drinking and taking recreational drugs such as marijuana and ecstacy. It is running rampant in the club scene and it has become the norm.
There are countless ways this harms our young, and our society as a whole. First and foremost it hurts the health and mental well being of those taking the drugs. Many people have died not only from overdosing, but also from drug related incidents. Last year there was the case of the girl that died while at a rave. She got scared when she saw the police and swallowed all the pills she had on her. I do not condone the use of ecstasy in any way, but it is considered a soft drug compared to others. Heroin for instance has destroyed many live. It is a horrible addiction and stay with the addict for life whether they take it or not. Young and bright people have thrown their futures away due to the addiction.
Secondly the selling and distribution of drugs is a very shady industry. Drug dealers have been known to easily kill people that get in the way of their business. These drug dealers not only hang around our streets trying to sell their product, they are a danger to all law abiding citizens.
There are things that can be done to prevent our young from become addicted to and abusing drugs. Firstly the culture of drug use must be broken. Many people see nothing wrong with smoking a joint to relax or popping a couple of pills before going out to a club. The more they treat drug use as an everyday thing, the more people will become comfortable with the thought of using drugs. People must be educated on the danger of drugs before they have to find out themselves the hard way. The introduction of drug testing, just like booze buses for alcohol, is a smart move on the part of the police. Drugs can affect a persons ability to safely operate a motor vehicle just as much as alcohol. My guess is it has stopped many drug users from continuing to drive while under the influence of drugs. The drugs problem must be stopped at the distribution level. The government appears to be trying to stop drug shipments from getting into Australia, yet the streets are still flooded with them.
