Consumers Still Spending Cautiously
Consumers Still Spending Cautiously – There are early signs the Australian retail industry is recovering from the global economic crisis, but shoppers remain cautious and continue to carefully budget household finances, a national survey has found.
With interest rates rising and a federal election looming, Australian women in particular will need a confidence boost before the desired retail recovery kicks in, the latest AMP Capital Shopping Centres shopping intent survey shows.
“Historically, women have always led retail recoveries and although many intend to spend less in several categories, there are clear signs of improvement from 12 months ago,” AMP Capital Shopping Centre head of marketing Stuart Langeveldt said today.
“In the meantime, retailers will need to continue to find innovative ways to appeal to cost conscious buyers.”
The survey found nearly 55 per cent of shoppers plan to spend the same or a bit more on eating out in cafes and restaurants this year, up from 35 per cent last year.
A sizeable 40 per cent said they would spend less on take away food, although this was down on 54 per cent last year.
