British Airways Strike Continues
British Airways Strike Continues – As British Airways cabin crew move into day three of their strike over pay and work practices, both sides are claiming the upper hand.
The union Unite says 80 per cent of its members are on the picket lines.
It described British Airways’ Terminal 5 at Heathrow as like a “ghost town”, saying scores of planes had been grounded and the airline’s contingency plans were failing.
The union’s Tony Woodley is appealing to the airline to resume negotiations.
“This dispute is not in the interest of the travelling public,” he said.
“It’s certainly not in the interest of the company and it’s not in the interest of my members.”
But BA says it reinstated flights as 97 per cent of cabin crew due to show up at Gatwick did so on Saturday, as did half at Heathrow.
The airline’s chief executive Willy Walsh says it is exceeding its contingency plan of flying 60 per cent of its passengers.
He hit back at the union on YouTube.
“I’ve got a lot of customers coming up to me, saying thank you for keeping BA flying,” he said.
If the two sides do not reach an agreement this week, there will be another four-day strike this weekend.
