Baby Elephant Recovering Well

Baby Elephant Recovering Well – The calf, which has been nicknamed ‘Mr Shuffles’ by staff, was born at the Sydney zoo to mother Porntip early on Wednesday.

Zoo keepers and veterinarians say the calf is stronger than they expected after a traumatic labour which led to it being pronounced dead on Monday.

They say Mr Shuffles has passed some important milestones – he is suckling independently and standing unassisted.

But in a statement, Taronga Zoo’s director Cameron Kerr says the calf still has a long way to go.

“He still needs ongoing care from his dedicated keepers and veterinary team who are working 24 hours a day to ensure his welfare,” he said.

“After surviving such a protracted labour it is not unexpected that he isn’t as robust as our other calf, Luk Chai, which was born after a quicker, more normal labour in July last year.”
