Baby Elephant Lives

Baby Elephant Lives – An elephant calf is fighting for life at Sydney’s Taronga Zoo after being born two days after zoo staff declared it had died in the womb.

Zoo spokesman Mark Williams said mother Asian elephant Porntip gave birth to the 100-kilogram male calf at about 3:30am today.

On Monday, staff at the zoo had said ultrasounds showed the calf was in an upside-down position, making it impossible for the mother to give birth.

The state of the calf’s health is unclear and zoo director Cameron Kerr says a vet team is working to support both mother and baby.

“While this is incredible news, the young calf still has a long way to go,” Mr Kerr said.

“There are no guarantees of its long-term survival at this early stage but we hope that its birth against the odds will stand it in good stead.”

He described the situation as “delicate”.

The mother and calf are in an enclosure together being cared for by vets.
