American Idiot Musical
Has there been a void in your life since Rent and Spring Awakening closed their curtains last year? Do you love The Who’s Tommy as much as I do (note to Broadway producers: that one is well overdue for a revival). Well, Broadway fans and punk rockers, get ready for a new rock opera to, uh, rock your world (thus concludes the last usage of the word “rock” in this piece). Green Day’s 2004 concept album American Idiot, which has long been rumored to be on its way to becoming a stage production, has finally been turned into a full-blown musical production.
I hear in these amazing songs the frustration and anger and dreams of a lost generation of Americans.” The plot of the show reflects this time; it “follows working-class characters from the suburbs to the city to the Middle East, as they seek redemption in a world filled with frustration — an exhilarating journey borne along by Green Day’s electrifying songs.” The soundtrack includes songs from both American Idiot as well as Green Day’s newest album, 21st Century Breakdown.
